RESUMO

This study used pineapple waste crude extract (PWCE) to increase the potential of Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) production for food sustainability and stability. The objective was to investigate the appropriate technique to increase the yield production and quality of shrimp and decrease waste from shrimp culture. Pacific white shrimp (average body size: 0.51 g) were fed with commercial feed supplemented with PWCE at various concentrations of 0 (control), 90, 170, and 250 ppt. Shrimp were fed five times per day for 80 days. At the end of the trial, the results showed that shrimp fed with the PWCE 250 ppt supplementation provided the highest growth rate and the best feed utilisation and yield (P < 0.05). The protein content of whole shrimp in all shrimp fed with the PWCE supplementation diet was higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05). On the contrary, the variation of endogenous digestive enzymes, including protease, trypsin, and the T/C ratio, was significantly lower in shrimp fed a diet supplemented with PWCE 250 ppt (P < 0.05). While in this group, the number of microorganisms on thiosulfate-citrate-bile salt-sucrose (TCBS), blood agar, and trypticase soy agar (TSA) was lowest (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the dietary PWCE at 250 ppt increased the volume of microvilli in the hindgut of shrimp, but the supplementation at 170 ppt improved the number of F-cells in the epithelial cells of the hepatopancreas. Nevertheless, the supplementation of PWCE in the diet did not affect the water quality (P > 0.05). Therefore, pineapple waste crude extract supplementation improves both quantitative and qualitative yields and tends to reduce waste.

This study aimed to investigate the potential of using field two-spotted cricket Gryllus bimaculatus as the main protein source in fish feed for striped snakehead (Channa striata) juveniles. A 10-week feeding effect on growth performance, feed utilization, digestibility of major nutrients, including amino acids, and physiological outputs of nitrogen and phosphorus were determined. A total of 225 C. striata juvenile fish (Initial weight, 15.0 ± 0.1 g) were randomly distributed into three dietary groups in triplicate (25 fish per rectangular aquarium within a semi-recirculating system). Each group was hand-fed one of the experimental diets containing the graded level of a cricket meal (CM) replacing 0%, 50%, and 100% (CM0%, CM50%, and CM100%, respectively) of fish meal (FM) protein component. The results showed that growth performance and protein retention tended to increase with increasing dietary CM levels, whereas the waste outputs of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) decreased. Apparent net protein utilization (ANPU) and P retention values increased with increasing levels of cricket meal inclusion level in the diet. There was a significant reduction in both N and P solid waste and dissolved waste output for snakehead with increased CM inclusion. There were significant effects of CM level on fish whole-body composition in terms of elevated protein and fat content. In conclusion, the CM is a viable alternative protein source for aquaculture feeds and can be included up to 100% as a replacement for FM without compromising the growth performance of striped snakehead Channa striata juveniles. This may also have a more favorable impact, with the potential to reduce N and P loading to the environment.

This study aimed to decrease the production cost and increase tilapia yield with a feeding regime. The trial was divided into four treatments with three replications followed by the feeding frequency in monosex male Nile tilapia with an average initial weight of 17.86-18.40 g/fish cultured on a net cage in the earth pond for three months. Fish fed with 18% protein supplemented with 5% protein concentrate. The first month was used by 32% protein feed twice per day (T1, control), fish were fed twice per day every other week (T2), fish were fed twice per day per week (T3), and fish were fed twice per day per week (T3). Fish fed twice per day per week are now fed twice per day (T4). These results revealed that T2 fish had the highest growth performance and most protein consumption (P < 0.05). Moreover, fish in T2 has the lowest production cost and highest benefit-cost ratio (B/C ratio) (P < 0.05). The highest percentage of edible meat in T2 was P < 0.05, but the proximate analysis was close for all three groups (P > 0.05). As a result, it is necessary to ensure that Nile Tilapia culture has sufficient protein and nutrition control. This will allow for both high growth and low cost. Fish health and quality were positively affected by a perfect protein-containing feeding regimen. In fish fed with 18% protein and 5% protein concentrate for the first month, followed by 32% protein feed twice every other day and then with 18% protein.

The present study aimed to isolate and characterize proteolytic Bacillus spp. from termite guts to test the possibility of application for improving the nutritional value and bioactivity of fermented soybean meal (FSBM). Aerobic endospore-forming bacteria were isolated from the gut of the termite Termes propinquus. Ten isolates with high levels of soy milk degradation were selected and tested for extracellular enzyme production. Among them, two isolates, Tp-5 and Tp-7, exhibited all tested hydrolytic enzyme activities (cellulase, xylanase, pectinase, amylase, protease, lipase and phytase), weak alpha hemolytic and also antagonistic activities against fish pathogenic species of Aeromonas and Streptococcus. Both phylogenetic and biochemical analyses indicated that they were closely related to Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. During solid-state fermentation of SBM, Tp-5 and Tp-7 exhibited the highest protease activity (1127.2 and 1552.4 U g-1, respectively) at 36 h, and the resulting FSBMs showed a significant increase in crude protein content and free radical-scavenging ability (P < 0.05), as well as an improvement in the composition of amino acids, metabolites and other nutrients, while indigestible materials such as fiber, lignin and hemicellulose were decreased. The potential strains, especially Tp-7, improved the nutritional value of FSBM by their strong hydrolytic and antioxidant activities, together with reducing antinutritional components.

The present study aimed to assess the possible effects of Assam tea (Camellia sinensis) extract (ATE) on growth performances, immune responses, and disease resistance of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus against Streptococcus agalactiae. Five levels of ATE were supplemented into the based diet at 0, 1, 2, 4, and 8 g kg-1 feed of Nile tilapia fingerlings (10.9 ±â€¯0.04 g initial weight) in triplicate. After four and eight weeks of feeding, fish were sampled to determine the effects of the tea supplements upon their growth performance, as well as serum and mucosal immune responses. A disease challenge using S. agalactiae was conducted at the end of the feeding trial. Fish fed ATE revealed significantly improved serum lysozyme, peroxidase, alternative complement (ACH50), phagocytosis, and respiratory burst activities compared to the basal control fed fish (P < 0.05). The mucus lysozyme and peroxidase activities were ameliorated through ATE supplementation in the tilapia diets. Supplementation of ATE significantly (P < 0.05) enhanced final body weight, weight gain, and specific growth rate; while a decreased feed conversion ratio was revealed at 2 g kg-1 inclusion level, after four and eight weeks. Challenge test showed that the relative percent survival (RSP) of fish in each treatment was 33.33%, 60.00%, 83.33%, 76.68%, and 66.68% in groups fed 0, 1, 2, 4, and 8 g kg-1, respectively. In summary, diets supplemented with ATE especially at 2 g kg-1 increased the humoral and mucosal immunity, enhanced growth performance, and offered higher resistance against S. agalactiae infection in Nile tilapia.

The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary phospholipids (PLs) on growth, lipid metabolism, and antioxidative status of hybrid snakehead (Channa argus × Channa maculata). Five isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets with graded levels of PLs (8.5, 19.3, 30.7, 41.5, and 50.8 g kg-1) were fed to triplicate groups of juveniles (initial body weight 12.6 ± 0.23 g) for 8 weeks. Results showed that dietary PL supplementation significantly improved growth of juveniles. The final body weight (FBW) and specific growth rate (SGR) significantly increased with dietary PLs increasing from 8.5 to 41.5 g kg-1 (P < 0.05). Fish fed with the diet containing 8.5 g kg-1 PLs showed higher feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to the other treatments (P < 0.05). Survival rate (SR) was not affected by dietary PL levels (P > 0.05). Liver lipid contents, serum triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) contents significantly decreased with the increasing levels of dietary PLs (P < 0.05). However, serum total cholesterol (TC) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) contents and HDL-C/TC and HDL-C/LDL-C value significantly increased with increasing dietary PL levels (P < 0.05). The catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and carnitine palmitoyl transferase I (CPT-1) activities in the liver significantly increased with incremental dietary PL level (P < 0.05), while the liver malondialdehyde (MDA) contents and fatty acid synthase (FAS) activity significantly reduced (P < 0.05). No significant difference was observed in the glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity among dietary treatments (P > 0.05).These results confirmed that dietary PL supplementation has beneficial effects on growth performance and antioxidant capacity of juvenile hybrid snakehead. Dietary PLs might reduce lipid deposition in the liver of juvenile hybrid snakehead.

The effects of oral administration of Astragalus polysaccharides (APS) and chitooligosaccharides (COS), single or combined, on the growth performance, immunity and disease resistance of M. salmoides were investigated. Largemouth bass juvenile were divided into 4 groups and each group was fed with diets supplemented with or without immunostimulant for 8 weeks. After 8 weeks of feeding trial, five fish per tank were sampled for immunity determination, ten fish per tank were challenged by A. hydrophila. The results showed that the largemouth bass fed with two immunostimulants alone or in combination significantly enhanced the final weight and specific growth rate (SGR), decreased feed conversion ratio (FCR) (P < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences (P < 0.05) in specific growth rate (SGR) between dietary COS and dietary APS. In addition, both COS and APS upregulated respiratory burst activity (RBA), phagocytic activity (PA), lysozyme activity and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Meanwhile, COS also exhibited a increase in total leukocyte count, nitric oxide (NO) content and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) activity compared to the control. When challenged with A. hydrophila, the mortality of groups fed with COS and/or APS was lower than the control (P < 0.05). Under the experimental conditions, dietary APS and COS had a synergistic effect on lysozme activity, iNOS activity, NO content and disease resistance of fish (P < 0.05).

The stability of formulated carotenoid diets during feed processing and under different storage conditions were studied. All carotenoid diets were split into two groups with one group containing BHT (acting as an antioxidant) at 250 ppm and the other without BHT. The experiment was divided into two parts. First, all diets were evaluated in total carotenoid (TC) loss during feed processing, in dry mixed feeds after being processed and dried. In the final part, the completed dietary carotenoids were stored in an aluminum foil bag, the top of which was sealed with a bag sealer and kept under different storage conditions at 26-28 °C and 4 °C. The stability of the TC was observed during an 8-week trial period. The results showed that the diet pelleting process did not affect the carotenoid content of the diets, and the best storage temperature for the formulated carotenoid diet was at 4 °C. However, an antioxidant was added to assist in energy saving before feed processing. Thus, the addition of BHT at 250 ppm can be done at normal room temperature in order to reduce oxidation that might cause a loss of TC quantities in diets.
